Because he was right handed. Try to cut off your right ear holding the razor in your right hand and its very difficult.
But with the left ear, hold the lobe with your left hand away from the face. Now place the razor behind this with the unsharpened edge on your left cheek and the blade under the left lobe. Strike outwards - off comes the lobe.

Romanticist, he cut off the lobe after a heated arguement between Gaugin and himself. Whether it was his left lobe because he is right handed is just a technicality.
It is stated in many books that Gaugin was leaving the next day. Poor poor mr van gogh could not have this... Once again he was going to be alone... So that nite he runs after him in the streets. Lucky for gaugin, he was fast witht runnin. So after about an hour of looking at himself, off goes the lobe... He cut off his left ear because he did have a mental illness (well done anonymous) but it was also because of love and it is possible that it was because it was hard to let his father go when he died because both of them had a very big realationship.
stand like vangogh was in the painting self portrait with a bandaged ear and bandage the same ear...NOW to look exactly like the painting, WHICH ear did you have to bandage?

the cutting of his ear had nothing to do with love, he states in his own letters that he had gotten into a spat with another artist and he got so frusturated and overwhelmed that he lost control of his anger and instead of taking it out on the others, he punished himself.

what i think he is trying to say is that that van gogh was a biosexual sheep that at the time his girlfriend was a starfish. He didn't love Rachel, and his "friend" was Gauguin (another famous artist) in which Gauguin and van Gogh's friendship was falling apart, that's why, he cut off the lobe of his left ear in desperation.
He also suffered from mental problems, and depression.

in alot of websites it just says he had an argument with gaugin and he cut off his ear out of frustration im not sure y he gave it to the prostitute maybe to ssave some money lol

I think he did it because he was in alot of stress because of bad relation ships and a streik of gobs lost
I heard his illness was caused by led poisoning, because he used led based paint and held the brush in his mouth. as for why he cut his ear.. well I always liked to believe it was for love, but who knows really? lol
